What is saffron?

Saffron is a prized spice derived from the Crocus sativus flower. It consists of red-orange threads called stigmas, which are handpicked and dried. Saffron is known for its vibrant colour, distinctive aroma, and unique flavour.

How much saffron should I use?

The amount of saffron needed depends on the recipe and personal preference. As a general guideline, a good starting point is 1-2 teaspoons of saffron threads per cup of liquid or per recipe. Adjust the quantity based on the desired intensity of flavour and colour.

For beverages, You should only need a few strands (threads). Start with four to five threads. If you decide you would like a more intense flavour, then add just a few more strands.

For tea, you do need to let the saffron brew with the Tea, or alternatively you can source ready-made Saffron Tea from our Tea collections.

How should I store saffron?

To maintain the freshness and quality of saffron, store it in an airtight container in a cool, dark place. Avoid exposing it to heat, moisture, and direct sunlight, as these can degrade its flavour and colour. When stored properly, saffron can retain its quality for up to two years.

Is saffron gluten free?

Yes, saffron is a gluten free product. For reference purposes gluten is derivate of wheat products. Saffron does not contain, nor come in contact with any wheat/gluten products or other known allergens.

How do I use saffron in cooking?

For infusing, soak the saffron threads in warm water, milk, or broth for about 15-20 minutes to release its flavour and colour. The infused liquid can then be added to your dish.

How do I know if Saffron is real or fake?

Real saffron filaments (threads) retain their original red colour when mixed with warm water, whereas any stamens treated with artificial dyes will rapidly lose any colour they have been treated with and consequently return to their original colour (yellow).
